In a significant move to modernize Ghana’s agricultural landscape, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Dumelo, has successfully brokered a series of strategic partnerships in the Netherlands aimed at enhancing domestic crop yields.
The Deputy Minister is currently in The Hague to finalize agreements with leading Dutch agricultural firms for the supply of high-quality, high-yielding vegetable seeds. This initiative is a central pillar of the Ministry’s “All-Year-Round Farming” policy, which seeks to move Ghana away from its traditional reliance on seasonal rainfall and toward a more resilient, technology-driven production cycle.
“Efficiency is the foundation of our transformation,” Hon. Dumelo stated during his engagements in the Netherlands. “By bridging the gap between global research and the Ghanaian farmer, we are ensuring that our agriculture sector can produce consistently, regardless of the season.”
Bridging the Gap
The Deputy Minister’s mission is not limited to international boardrooms. Upon his return to Ghana next week, Hon. Dumelo is scheduled to embark on a nationwide “Farm Clinic” tour to directly engage with local stakeholders and prepare for the upcoming planting season.
The tour will see the Deputy Minister visiting several key farming hubs, including:
-
Sankori and Dormaa (Bono Region)
-
Sampa (Bono Region)
-
Sissala East and West (Upper West Region)
During these visits, the Hon. MP will meet with local farmers to share strategies for the new season and introduce the research-driven innovations and high-yielding seeds secured during his European mission.
A Focus on Food Security
Since his appointment as Deputy Minister, Hon. Dumelo has been a vocal advocate for youth involvement in agriculture and the industrialization of the sector. This latest move to secure premium seeds is expected to significantly reduce post-harvest losses and lower the cost of vegetables on the local market by ensuring a steady, year-round supply.
As the new farming season approaches, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture remains committed to providing farmers with the tools and technology needed to turn Ghana into a regional agricultural powerhouse.
